Don't be THAT GUY

From my good friend Dave Clark, author of A Man's Rules

OK, I’m the first to admit it. When that guy cuts me off in traffic, speeds around two cars and gets back in the left lane, my first thought is "What a $#&!" At least I used to.

Last year, I had occasion to rush my son to the ER after he was throwing up blood (complications of throat surgery). Heading to the hospital, I was speeding, racing around cars, being less than polite when people wouldn’t move over. My son needed immediate, urgent care and I was going to do whatever it took to get it for him.

Days later, someone cut me off. I didn’t yell or honk at him. All I could think of was how I frantically drove to the ER that day. Maybe this guy was rushing his kid to the ER. Maybe he was rushing to his mother’s bedside to hear her last words. Maybe, he had a reason that would excuse his behavior.

Who am I to judge so quickly? I don’t know the story. I don’t know their reason for acting the way they did. Maybe she snapped at that barista because her boss gave her terrible news. Maybe he is losing his house to foreclosure. I don’t know.

Is that any reason to treat others badly, or cause an accident? No. But it is enough for us to give the guy some slack, to move over and let him by, because we don’t know his story.

So the next time someone cuts you off, instead of honking, just say a prayer for his kid.
