What causes anxiety?

If someone asked me to choose between depression or anxiety then I guess I would have to choose depression, because anxiety is extremely draining socially, relationally, and at times...occupationally!  Yes depression is very tough as well, but depression (in my life) really takes its toll.

However, it would be nice to get rid of both.  The reality is that there are times we are all going to experience anxiety, but we aren't talking about the "normal" anxiety today...we are talking about the anxiety left unchecked and out of control.

To the left you see a chart that describes how this occurs.  For some of us all it takes is a little spark of worry and we take it and turn it into a forest fire of anxiety.  So how can we avoid letting this happen?

First you have to begin to breath!  When anxiety hits we tend to hold our breath or begin very shallow breathing, which leads to dizziness and other physiological symptoms.  And that of course leads to further anxiety!  So use the chart to the left hot understand how this process works.  Just knowing that your response to anxiety causes the dizziness and extra heart beats can help you calm yourself down.  Another thing that can help reduce anxiety is to quit being so self-focused.  We will talk more about this in upcoming blogs, but for now just think about how much time you spending thinking about and talking about you.

I'm not trying to say that those of us that are struggling with anxiety are usually self-absorbed, but...well...yes I'm saying we become self-absorbed.  And because we are so focused on our life, our health, our feelings, and our situation we allow it to consume us.  Now don't get me wrong, if you just got really bad news then you deserve some "you time."  This is more about those of us that tend to find ways to be anxious even when things are honestly going well.
